Salvaging lead

This boat requires close to 8,000 pounds of external ballast.  We gathered up lead from various sources, including lead pipes, part of an old diving bell, and buckets of used wheel weights.  The largest contribution came from the good ship Tegolin, an old Columbia 20  which had seen better days.  We towed the Tegolin from Penn’s landing to the Pyne Point yard in Camden, NJ where we had her hauled out.  It took a few days to demolish her and recover 4,100 pounds of lead.

    Which method did you use to remove the lead from the Tegolin?

    Was the boat you built a 40 footer?

      We just demolished the boat, leaving the lead behind. We then chopped up the lead (chainsaw works fairly well with this, but you have to be careful with the “dust”) into more manageable pieces, and hauled it back to the shop.

        The initial reason for my writing was to enquire about the quantity of lead used in a 40 footer?

        I am in the process to buy something in a similar state to your Tegolin; but only for the scrap value.

        It is a 39 footer, though. (Apparently one pays less Port Taxes etc. for anything smaller than 40 foot, thus the owner building it as a 39 footer)

        I am told that it contains 8 tons (8000 kilograms) of lead.

        I am willing to pay ZAR10 000-00 for the vessel. This amounts to around $US 1000.

        My demolishing costs will double the initial purchase price.

        After reading your complete story, though, I am very interested in following the complete progress of your venture and pray for your success.
